Georgia Nevada: Finding her way back 'Home' in her new music

Georgia Nevada is a UK Southern Rock and Americana artist making a name for herself across the UK country scene. With family in America, Nevada was inundated with CDs that her nan would bring back, grounding her music tastes firmly in country from an early age.

After taking some time out, Nevada is back with two new hit tracks, ‘Home’ and a surprise release, ‘Pedigree’. We caught up about the stories behind her songs, her new music video and what else is happening for her this year.

Nevada is a self-taught musician, starting with a pink Fender Stratocaster from Toys R Us – the dream – back when she was 13, and moving on to an acoustic guitar when she was 15 to help her pursue her passion of singing and songwriting. Since then, she’s had two UK country iTunes no1 hits, an all genre top 40 track and a BCMA nomination for Female Artist of the Year.

‘Home’ was an announced and expected track for Nevada fans, with a cool music video to match – including a dance routine that I absolutely need to learn. “It’s about how home for me isn’t a physical state necessarily,” she says about the story behind the song, “it can be a mental state, it can be a feeling.”

Writing music is oftentimes a form of therapy for artists and ‘Home’ was no different for Nevada. “It was really quick to write,” she says about the song, “it took like half an hour, it was like it needed to leave me.”

“That feeling that you've got where you've got this goal in your head,” Nevada goes on to say about her writing process, “but you don't know which direction it's going in and you're floating with the wind…that's sort of how I felt when I was writing ‘Home’. It's like the journey is on your way to trying to achieve something. You never really know how you're gonna get there or what route you're gonna take. Sometimes you end up liking the little detours.”

Her second track, ‘Pedigree’, was a surprise release. “I was really looking forward to getting that one out actually because it's like a completely different sound to anything that I've ever really done before. But I love it. It was such a fun song.”

“Pedigree is literally about everybody,” Nevada says, “it's like that sort of mid 20s, 30s age where everyone's having babies. And, you know, my husband and I, we got married, but the idea of having kids right now was just not even on the radar… so we got a dog.” The fun, toe tapper is a relatable number for everyone who is managing the most responsibility they can – being happy and supportive of your friends for their choices but recognising and validating your own, too.

These two tracks mark the relaunch of Georgia Nevada and her original music. But more so than that, the tracks tell the story of why her music has been so important to her during difficult times. “It was like the highest highs and the absolute lowest lows,” she says about her time out, “When I was in that really low point, it was the optimistic point of view that it will get better…I'll get back to feeling at home with myself, with my music, with everything.”

Taking inspiration from artists like Elle King and Ashley McBryde, you can hear the influence of that southern rock and attitude in Nevada’s music.  “They can do the Southern rock,” she says about the artists she admires, “they can do the happier songs, they can do the tongue -in -cheek songs, they can do the serious songs…it’s always going to be a little bit rocky and a little bit country.”

Georgia Nevada is continuing to release new music later in the year and is currently in the thick of festival season – check out her website to find out where you can catch her.
