Rhiannon Paige has been making some noise on the music scene this year – particularly with her cover of ‘Holding Out For A Hero’ which has surpassed over 200,000 streams on Spotify alone, and is a firm fan favourite.
During her busy summer of festivals and gigs, Paige has also released her long awaited ‘Lemonade’ – a fun, upbeat number that is perfect for pulling you out of a slump and getting you back into the good vibes.
I first heard ‘Lemonade’ back in April at Live In The Living Room Gives Back, where Paige played the song during the writers round style event. It was acoustic, but her inimitable vocals and interaction with her audience carried the song so well, I’ve been desperate for it to be released ever since.
“I’ve been pushing it so much that everyone’s like, ‘of course I’ve heard the song, it’s been everywhere’,” she says about playing the song in her sets before its release, teasing us all with the fun summer song.
Lemonade sits as a reminder to us all to have the confidence to let things go that aren’t serving you – almost like the sunken cost fallacy.
“It’s like a metaphor for all the negative things in life,” she says about the track, “it’s like not just sticking with something just because you’ve given it time.”
The song holds personal significance for Paige as she begins to find comfort in her individuality and the confidence to live without the validation of others – both a powerful and freeing feeling.
“I used to be that person that was stressed about everything,” she says, “now I am someone that’s just like, you know, it is what it is…if someone doesn’t like me, then they don’t like me.”
“I wouldn’t say I’m fully comfortable with myself – I don’t think I ever will be – but I think you just realise what’s important in life and actually, the little things that you hold on to aren’t that important.”
Paige’s favourite section of ‘Lemonade’ is the chorus because she “likes that it makes sense without making sense.” We fall about laughing as she adds another, “does that make sense?” Paige has a disarming likeability that shines through this interview, particularly here when she’s able to roll with the jokes and stay grounded, but retains the focus of the questions.
“Just a little word for my mum and dad because every time I sing it, I see my parents faces and it makes them smile, so it makes me smile.”
‘Lemonade’ is the uplifting track you need if you’re trying to hold on to that summer feeling. The fun melodies and catchy tune sit around the meaningful lyrics, making it seem so much easier to just let it go. Because, really, why would you want a lemon, if you don’t like lemonade?
